Since the outbreak of coronavirus was recorded in Bangladesh in the beginning of March, experts and conscious people are concerned about Bangladesh's readiness to counter this virus. It is not clear whether the government is considering the number of doctors and nurses it will need to deal with a large-scale outbreak because it is almost impossible to prevent an epidemic in this huge population with only doctors and nurses from government hospitals and the health department. Also, it would not be farfetched to assume that there is no doctor in Bangladesh who has real experience to handle such infectious diseases.
According to a report of the Department of Health, so far 5,293 beds have been prepared in the country for the treatment of corona sufferers. 107 doctors have been trained in the last 4 days. Also, coronavirus treatment guidelines have been updated and sent to all medical college hospitals along with district and upazila hospitals of the country.
Since the disease is highly contagious and the duration
of suffering is long and difficult, it is important to nip
it in the bud while there is still time
Moverover, gloves, surgical masks and gowns have been sent to the hospitals accordingly. This preparation would seem seemingly sufficient. But, one can never be too careful about whether the numbers will ultimately add up or not.
Experts say that it has not been identified whether the expatriates who entered the country in the first stage were carrying the virus. However, there are many who came later and have spread across the country. It is also difficult to predict what the infected situation will be in the next 12 to 14 days if the first entrants are caught.
Since the disease is highly contagious and the duration of suffering is long and difficult, it is important to nip it in the bud while there is still time. We think that all the doctors in the country need to be prepared now with the necessary training and motivation for the treatment of this outbreak.
In order to meet the shortage of the required nursing staff, it is important to prepare a list of volunteers from various voluntary organisations, scouts, cadets and university students and train them as well. In this way the nation must be prepared to face an unprecedented state of emergency should ever there arise one.
