Substandard materials used in road work in Raozan

Concerns have emerged over the use of substandard materials in a road construction project worth Tk 2.42 crore in Chattogram’s Raozan upazila. The 1,600-meter-long road, near Uttar Gojra Bishwash Government Primary School, is being constructed under the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), with Lucky Enterprise as the contractor.

Tensions flared when locals intercepted a truck carrying cracked concrete blocks and prevented them from being unloaded. “The blocks were visibly damaged,” said local resident Kabir Ahmed. “When we objected, they said an engineer would inspect them. But we made it clear—such materials won’t be accepted or used here.”

Abdul Kader, another resident, alleged the construction deviates from the approved design, stating that road shoulders were not being constructed as planned.

In response, contractor Habib Ullah admitted the blocks were withdrawn following local objections and promised to use quality materials.

“We will meet the community’s expectations,” he said.

Upazila LGED Engineer Abul Kalam confirmed the issue, noting that materials from an unapproved company had been supplied.

“We’ve instructed the contractor to avoid substandard materials,” he assured.
