Owner of a Bangladesh garment factory has gifted blankets and medicine to earthquake-hit people of Turkey.

Salauddin Chowdhury, Chairman of the Stylish Garments Limited, on Friday handed over the consignment to the consulate officer at the Turkish embassy in Dhaka.

"Consulate officer Mahmut welcomed us and we both discussed about our bilateral relationship between both countries under any circumstances. May Almighty Allah bless us all," he said after the handing over ceremony.

His wife Maksuda Chowdhury Misha, Managing Director of Stylish Garments Limited, was also present.

Earlier, the United Nations launched an appeal for $1 billion to help victims in Turkey of last week's devastating earthquakes that killed thousands of people and left millions more in desperate need of aid. On the disaster's 11th day on February 16, the death toll in Turkey rose to 38,044, making it the deadliest disaster in the country in 100 years.  The toll in Syria has reached 5,814, taking the combined death toll in both countries to 43,858. The Bangladesh government, earlier, sent relief materials to Turkey and Syria.

The government also deployed civil military teams to assist the Turkish government in search and rescue operations. After the earthquake on February 6, Foreign Minister Dr. A K Abdul Momen expressed deepest condolences to the government and the people of Türkiye and Syria on the tragic loss of lives.

"Bangladesh stands beside the brotherly people of Türkiye and is ready to extend any kind of help at this particular time," Dr. Momen had said in the message.
