We highly applaud and welcome the initiative taken by our students standing by flood victims during this tough time. We are also overwhelmed by their massive activities for collecting funds, food, medicines and other relief materials to help affected people in flood-hit districts.

People from all walks of life are showing interest in providing assistance to the people badly affected by devastating floods. We are very lucky because we have brave students who have shouldered the responsibility of this nation during this crucial time. We also salute our students for doing this great job.

At least 20 people died and over 48 lakh people have been affected as flash floods hit 77 upazilas in 12 districts of the country. Feni, Cumilla, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, Chattogram, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Lakshmipur and Cox's Bazar districts have been affected in the ongoing flood since August 20.

The general people of the country are also lauding their initiatives saying that they all have a lot to learn from the young generation. They will encourage the future generations. We all should join such initiatives.

After the fall of Sheikh Hasina government, students of Dhaka University are trying to build a better nation than ever before. Apart from Dhaka University, students of different public and private universities, colleges, and schools are also seen carrying out massive campaign for collecting funds and relief for flood victims.

In response to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s call, relief collection drive called “Gonotraan” is going on at TSC of Dhaka University to aid the people affected by devastating floods. We saw people of all strata coming and providing their donations at the booth set up in front of Student-Teacher Centre (TSC).

Besides, people from different places are giving various relief materials, including bottled water, beverage, bread, biscuit and flattened rice (chira) along with daily essentials. We saw many teams of students going to different districts, including Feni, Cumilla, and Noakhali, to rescue flood victims.

Moreover, the students were seen individually collecting funds in the campus area to help flood victims. They are running similar programmes at their departments and on social media as well.

We saw students also receiving money and enlisting every small and large amounts with due accountability. All relief materials have been enlisted properly. School and college students are seen involved with voluntary work.

People are donating both money and necessary goods, including medicines, dry food, clothes, sanitary napkins, water, life jackets etc. It was seen in TSC area that volunteers were busy keeping the area clear as vans, pickups, and trucks were arriving with relief materials one after another.

The sports room and TSC cafeteria have already been stockpiled with relief goods and it seems that the cafeteria has turned into a storehouse. Our students think it is time to build up the country and show their power and unity. And it is their moral duty to stand by affected people.

For better management, volunteer students have been divided into groups. Some are controlling traffic, some are receiving money and relief goods, some are showing the people who do not know the area and some students are packaging goods for final delivery.

Such unity and compassion has not been seen at Dhaka University for a long time. As the nation grapples with devastating flood, all imbued with the spirit of the student movement should come forward to help distressed people.
