A non-profit shop was opened by students of madrasas, schools, colleges, and universities in Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat, who are selling essential commodities at a low price.
The non-profit shop opens two days a week, Wednesday and Saturday.
A large crowd of customers was seen to gather at the shop from noon until evening on last Wednesday. The shop, located in front of the central Shaheed Minar gate of the upazila, is run by general students from madrasas, schools, colleges, and universities of Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat district. The customers are pleased to buy goods at lower prices from there.
It was learnt that the non-profit shop was set up under the banner of general students to provide some relief to the general consumers. At this shop, lentils are being sold at Tk 105 per kg, eggs at Tk 45 per dozen, sugar at Tk 125 per kg, local onions Tk 105 per kg, garlic at Tk 220 per kg, and green chilies at Tk 115 per kg. Consumers claimed that these prices are more affordable compared to other shops in the market. Additionally, the shop avoids using plastic and provides products in eco-friendly bags.
Shahadat Khandakar, Manowar Hossain, and Mosharraf Mollah, who came to buy products in the shop, said we indeed found goods at lower prices at the non-profit shop. The quality of the products is also very good. Even though we had to travel from far away, we are happy to buy goods at such affordable prices, they said.
The organizers of the non-profit shop, including Didarul Islam, Tanvir Biswas, Sheikh Hasan, Shihab Munshi, Naim Munshi, Ratul Sheikh, Abdul Karim Sheikh, Sharno Akter, Sadia Akter, Mishti Akter, Mou Akter, and Lamia said in a joint statement ‘we are trying, in our small way, to break the traders' syndicate so that the common people can get some relief. We urge everyone to help in reforming the country for a better future.’
