Foil plots to create chaos

We express our deep concern and resentment over the violent clashes between traders and Dhaka College students in the city’s New Market-Nilkhet area. At least one person was killed and 50 others were injured in the clashes.

An altercation between shopkeepers and Dhaka College students on Monday night led to a series of clashes between the two sides and the violent clashes continued till Wednesday night. The fresh clash erupted as the students went to the intersection on Tuesday morning to form a human chain in protest against Monday’s attack on them by members of the New Market Traders’ Association. But some traders of New Market ‘teased and provoked’ the students.

The clashes deteriorated the overall traffic situation in large scale intensifying the sufferings of thousands of commuters. It has been observed that traders show a tendency to be quickly irritated or provoked centring trifle issue in recent times in New Market-Nilkhet area. Therefore, the skirmishes began on Monday night and continued till Wednesday turning the whole area into a battleground.

Members of the law enforcement agencies must remain

vigilant and appropriate action will have to be taken

against those involved in these incidents immediately

We think the traders who ‘teased and provoked’ the students are the part of the evil forces. If they were real traders they would not have teased or provoked the students as the sale got momentum on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

However, we also condemn the violence unleashed against teachers alongside students of Dhaka College by traders with sticks and stones. As the teachers wanted to talk to the association leaders in order to resolve the crisis, different groups of traders swooped on them and assaulted them physically indiscriminately. Such attack on teachers cannot be accepted and tolerated.

We think a vested quarter is trying to create unrest at educational institutions. Therefore, the authorities must identify them immediately and bring them to book.   We hope the authorities concerned will resolve the ongoing clashes within the shortest possible time and those, who did it, will face the music. Members of the law enforcement agencies must remain vigilant and appropriate action will have to be taken against those involved in these incidents immediately. We all will have to keep in mind that tolerance makes it possible for people to coexist peacefully as it is the basis for a fair society in which everyone can lead their lives smoothly.
