Stronger inter-ministerial coordination stressed to foster FDI

Speakers at a webinar observed that It is necessary to strengthening coordination among various ministries of the government to boost the inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). 

They said the government’s efforts to improve the business environment in recent years show promise but implementation in some sectors has yet to materialize. Slow adoption of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms and the  corruption are hindering the  foreign investment. 

The views came up at the webinar on “Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Bangladesh: Current Status and Prospects”, organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB) on Tuesday. 

Dr. Nahid Rashid, Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, joined the webinar as the chief guest while Avijit Chowdhury, Executive Member (Additional Secretary), Strategic Investment, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) joined as the special guest. 

ICAB President Md. Moniruzzaman FCA delivered address of welcome and Council Member and past president Md. Humayun Kabir FCA moderated the session. 

Dr. Khondaker Golam Moazzem, Research Director, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) and  MAbdul Haque, former President, Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce & Industry (JBCCI)  were the panel speakers. Md. Ariful Hoque, Director, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) presented the keynote paper in the seminar. 

ICAB President Md.  Moniruzzaman FCA said, a decade of economic and political stability have made Bangladesh one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. FDI is considered a potent weapon for developing an economy like Bangladesh and can play an important role in achieving the country’s socio-economic objectives, he added. 

Talking about the Investment Climate of Bangladesh, the keynote presenter Md. Ariful Hoque, Director, BIDA cited some government policies, provisions for   Incentives, protection of the Investment in the country.
