Strong quake jolts Assam, parts of Bangladesh

A strong earthquake, measuring 6 magnitude on the Richter scale, hit different parts of the country including Dhaka on Wednesday morning. 

The earthquake was felt in Bangladesh and India in a span of 30 minutes.

The tremor was felt around 8:21am, said Sheikh Hanif, Electronic Assistant at Dhaka Met office.

The epicenter of the earthquake was neighboring Assam in India, approximately 13,104 kilometers away from the capital, according to Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The first major earthquake was followed by three aftershocks, one at around 7:55 am (IST) and the other two were felt few minutes after that. The aftershocks measured 4.0, 3.6 and 3.1 on the Richter Scale.

The earthquake was felt in Sylhet, Mymensingh, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari including Dhaka.

According to India's National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale originated in Sonitpur, Tezpur of Assam. The first earthquake was recorded at 7:51 am (IST), and according to the seismology centre, it was centred 43 km west of Tezpur.  

No reports of serious damages or casualties from the tremors have been reported in Bangladesh. 

However, Assam sustained widespread damages, the officials said. 

Several houses in Assam have developed cracks, local TV channels in India reported. People were seen standing outside on the streets, anxious about fresh tremors.

Earlier, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) put the quake magnitude at 6.2, according to Reuters.
