Strike called by Sylhet filling stations

Published : 14 Jan 2023 08:18 PM

The Sylhet Divisional Committee of CNG Filling Stations and Petrol Pumps and Owners Association has announced the indefinite closure of pumps in Sylhet. The announcement was made on Saturday at noon.

There has been a severe shortage of fuel in Sylhet's petrol pumps for several months. The crisis has been exacerbated by the prolonged shutdown of state-owned local refineries, shortage of rail wagons, and increased demand during the winter season. Businessmen have been holding various programs for a long time demanding the opening of refineries in Sylhet to solve the fuel oil crisis. But the refineries have been closed due to various reasons.

Due to a lack of supply as per demand, businessmen of Sylhet have to procure fuel oil from Bhairab at their own expense. This increases the cost of transportation.

All petrol pumps in the division are running low on oil due to low supply. Diesel has faced the biggest crisis. Businessmen claim that they are not getting even half of the demand for diesel. Sylhet Divisional Committee of the CNG Filling Station and Petrol Pump and Owners Association has announced an indefinite strike from Sunday (January 22) of this month as the problem is not resolved.

Bangladesh Petroleum Dealers Distributors Agents and Petroleum Owners Association Central Secretary General and Sylhet Divisional Committee President Zubair Ahmad Chowdhury confirmed the matter on Saturday afternoon.

He said that there has been a gas crisis in Sylhet for a long time.

No solution came even after complaining to the concerned people repeatedly. Therefore, from next Wednesday (January 18), oil lifting from the depot will be stopped. And on Sunday (January 22) all pumps in Sylhet will be closed indefinitely.

It is to be mentioned that almost half of the three wheelers in the division are run by CNG, LNG. The other half use traditional fuel as petrol and diesel. For many weeks, fuel pumps in the division are being unable to provide adequate fuel to these vehicles. After tolerating this irregularity for a long stretch of time, pump owners jointly took the decision to call the strike. They are hoping that authorities will take quick steps to resolve the issues.
