To prevent propaganda and rumors through social media, teachers of various educational institutions, mainly the teachers from the government primary and high-schools, have been brought under strict surveillance.

Surveillance has also been enhanced to reduce negligence by the teachers in their duties.

As part of the government move, several teachers have already been suspended while many others have been asked to show cause for why punitive actions would not be taken against them on various charges.

Alamgir Muhammad Mansurul Alam, Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education, said, "Committees have been formed at the district and upazila levels after warnings were issued about the misuse and abuse of social media.

“We have been asked to take action against any rumor, disobeying government decisions and non-compliance with government directives”, he said.

According to the Directorate of Primary Education, many teachers have shared various posts on social media protesting against the government's decision to keep educational institutions open during the month of Ramadan. Rumors have also been spread using the name of the Prime Minister. These issues are being monitored.

Officials of the Directorate of Primary Education said that officials in the field level have already been directed to take strict and necessary measures. If any of the field level officials fail to follow the government directives, punitive measures would also be taken against them by the Directorate of Primary Education.

They said that the committee formed in the district and upazila levels will monitor the activities in the facebook, youtube and social media of the teachers. Besides, other activities of the teachers will also be monitored.

If any negligence is found in the monitoring by the committee officials, they would also be brought under punishment.

The Director General said, "Field level officials will monitor the social activities of the teachers and also their academic activities in the schools.

"If they fail, action will be taken against the teachers as well as the officials”, he said.

It should be mentioned that since educational institutions had to keep shut during the last two years due to COVID-19 pandemic, the government decided to keep educational institutions open till 20th Ramadan. But, a section of teachers and a vested quarter took the government decision in a different way. Many of them shared posts in the social media disobeying the government directives. Besides, some others misquoted the Prime Minister.

Not only that, some untoward incidents took place at different educational institutions causing social nuisance and suffering to some people, including teachers.

In this circumstance, the government decided to monitor the activities by the teachers in the society and in the social media.
