Speakers from a rally of awareness campaign in the city have said that honking of horns causes noise pollution and affects public health. The unnecessary honking must be stopped in Dhaka city and other parts of the country to save the people from noise pollution. Awareness can play a vital role in this regard.
The Department of Environment (DoE) carried out the awareness campaign on noise pollution in the Dhanmondi area in the city on Tuesday (September 12, 2023). The awareness rally was held on the road in front of Anwar Khan Modern Medical College and Hospital.
The DoE carried out the awareness campaign in the area as the noise pollution in the area where many hospitals and schools, including Viqarunnisa Noon School & College, is at a terrible level due to the unnecessary use of horns by vehicle drivers.
The ‘Integrated and Partnership Project on Noise Pollution Control’ project of the DoE arranged the campaign programme to make the people aware. Members of Dhanmondi police station and Bangladesh Scouts collaborated with the DoE to make the programme a success.
During the campaign, leaflets on noise pollution control were distributed among the pedestrians and drivers in the area. The organisers said that such awareness is being carried out across the country.
Experts said that noise pollution in Dhaka city is steadily worsening due to the unnecessary use of horns by vehicle drivers. Unnecessary honking of horns is one of the major reasons that the hearing of Dhaka’s residents is being impaired.
The use of motorcycles has increased, and this is a source of the horn sounds.
There is no alternative but to apply the laws and mobilise awareness to stop the unnecessary use of horns in Dhaka city and other parts of the country. Alongside awareness, the agencies concerned must take a stern stance to stop the unwarranted use of horns.
