Stocks fall straight four week

The country’s stocks have witnessed a losing streak for straight four weeks at both bourses.

Worried investors, as a result, continued their selling spree on sector-wise securities apprehending further deterioration of the market.

Market analysts said the share markets extended downtrend as investors were reluctant to inject fresh funds into stocks amid lack of confidence for ongoing bearish market.

“On the other hand, some investors sold their shares after a number of companies reported disappointing earnings,” they said, adding even some market-supportive measures failed to restore investors’ confidence.

“Besides, poor macroeconomic indicators, dearth of quality stocks and liquidity crunch also contributed to the ongoing confidence crisis among investors.”

They said the share market has been going through the bad patch due to a drop in foreign investment, fear of instability of the market coupled with thin participation of institutional investors.

However, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSEX) lost by 38 points or 0.85 percent to close at 4,418 in last week.

The DSEX has decreased a total of 312 points in the past four straight weeks, while it went down 1,532 points since January 24 of this year.

On the other hand, the DS30 index, comprising blue chips, declined by 4.52 points to settle at 1,508 and the DSE Shariah Index decreased by 2.58 points to finish at 994 during the last week.

The total turnover on the DSE went down to Tk 10.79 billion during the last week against Tk 11.18 billion in the week before.

 The daily average turnover declined by 3.56 percent to  Tk 2.69 billion from Tk 2.79 billion in the previous week.

The market capitalisation of the DSE also dent down by 3.56 percent to Tk 3,384 billion on Thursday from Tk 3,396 billion in the previous week.

The losers beat the gainers as out of 356 issues traded, 229 ended lower, 90 closed higher and 37 remained unchanged on the DSE floor.

Khulna Power dominated and became the top on weekly turnover chart with 7.75 million shares worth Tk 360 million changing hands.

It was followed by Square Pharmaceuticals (Tk 298 million), Ring Shine Textiles (Tk 265 million), Beacon Pharmaceuticals (Tk 239 million) and National Life Insurance (Tk 235 million).

Anlima Yarn Dyeing was the best performer, posting a gain of 18.13 percent while Samata Leather Complex was the worst loser, losing 12.76 percent during the week.

Meanwhile, the Chattogram Stock Exchange (CSE) also saw negative trend during the last week with its selective category index (CSCX) losing nearly 43 points to close at 8,163 points.

On the other hand, all Share Price Index of the CSE was higher by almost 67 points to 13,464 points on Thursday.

At the CSE, total 294 issues were traded. Among them, 86 closed higher, 180 ended lower and 28 remained unchanged during the week.

However, the number of shares transacted on the floor of the CSE was almost 21 million and the total turnover in value was almost Tk 668 million last week.
