It is good to note that the government is going to take prior measures to keep the commodity prices stable during the holy month of Ramadan.

As reported by this daily on Monday, in order to ensure the availability of essentials, the government has directed the business community to increase the import of certain major commodities for the holy month so that consumers can buy daily commodities like onion, gram, edible oil, sugar, pulses, and flour at affordable prices during Ramadan.

We have come to know that the government agencies will regularly monitor the market after Shab-e-Barat so that the unscrupulous traders do not get any opportunity to manipulate the market. Reportedly, two separate teams from the Directorate of National Consumer Right Protection (DNCRP) and the Food Ministry will also observe the market situation.

We hope that the steps taken by the government

will be effective and able to stabilise the market

during the holy month

While commodity prices in other Muslim countries across the world are decreased during Ramadan, in Bangladesh it is completely the opposite. In this holy month for Muslims, a section of unscrupulous businessmen hike the prices of essentials with a view to taking illegal advantage of the month.

As a result, middle income and lower-middle income people pass the month with untellable hardship.  Considering this, the government should take harsher stand against the unscrupulous traders. The government has to enhance its market vigilance and the monitoring process should be equipped with adequate manpower and resources.

However, we hope that the steps taken by the government will be effective and able to stabilise the market during the holy month. We too want to be hopeful about the positive changes in the market, unlike previous years. We also hope those who want to exploit the poor people in Ramadan will be held to account.
