Steps for modernising land ports

Boosting revenue, export, import aimed at

Country's three main land ports -- Hili, Burimari and Banglabandha will be equipped with modern facilities and infrastructures to boost imports and exports and thus increase revenue collection.

Sources said, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) is going to implement a project of Tk 80.61 crore under which new physical infrastructures will be constructed at the three ports by June 2024. The land ports will be equipped with all modern facilities to increase revenue collection through boosting imports and exports.

"The government has already cleared the project and we've completed our preparation for its implementation. It will help increase the capacity of the ports and thus boost border trade and revenue collection," said an NBR official.                

Under the project titled 'Construction of Physical Infrastructure of Hili, Burimari and Banglabandha LC Stations,' infrastructure of the Burimari of Patgram in Lalmonirhat, Banglabandha of Tentulia in Panchagarh and Hili port of Hakimpur in Dinajpur will be constructed.

The NBR official said the objective of the project is to strengthen internal revenue collection by increasing import-export duty expanding the physical infrastructure and physical facilities of these three customs land ports, proper monitoring and monitoring of import-export duty and VAT collection activities.

It will help strengthen internal revenue collection by providing improved housing facilities to officials, curb smuggling and illegal trade by increasing customs and excise activities in border areas, ensure a fair, hygienic and conducive environment to increase the work efficiency of officials and employees engaged in import-export duty collection.

Under the project, 12 acres of land will be developed and a 6,000 sqft office building, 34,290 sqft residential building, 3,369 sqft sepoy barrack building and a 24,300 sqft dormitory building will be constructed.

If the project is implemented, the physical infrastructure facilities at Hili, Burimari and Banglabandha ground customs stations in the north will increase, the NBR official said, adding that as a result, it will be possible to increase customs and excise activities at these stations as well as prevent the spread of smuggling and illegal trade.
