On the occasion of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, the authorities concerned must take immediate steps to ease traffic congestion and strictly maintain law and order across the country as criminal activities like extortion, mugging and snatching rise centering the Eid festival.

Every year, organised criminal gangs called ‘Malam Party’ and ‘Agyan Party’ become active before Eid festival. They take away money and belongings from the victims by making them unconscious. Besides, currency counterfeiting gangs circulate fake notes in the shopping centres and markets, particularly in the cattle markets across the country.  Organised gangs manufacture fake notes around the year and before Eid festival, circulation of fake notes increases as people spend a lot of money on shopping on any big occasions like Eid. Criminal activities such as  mugging, snatching and extortion take place in lanes, by-lanes and streets of the capital, other metropolitan cities, district towns and roads and highways.

People, particularly passers-by and passengers of long-distance buses, rickshaws and auto-rickshaws vehicles fall prey to different organised gangs of criminals and lose their cash, mobile phones, gold ornaments and other valuables. If any passer-by or passenger refuses to pay them, the criminals attack them with sharp weapons or even with gun. As crowd in the markets is increasing now, we fear increase in the criminal activities like mugging and statching. Armed hoodlums have already started returning to their respective areas in the last couple of weeks. They are collecting illegal tolls from different markets and shop owners.

Every year cattle traders face extortion on roads and highways while comming to the cattle markets in the capital and other metropolitan cities from different areas. It is alleged that cops and hardened criminals do not allow any cattle-carrying trucks to cross different points on highways, especially on Dhaka-Khulna, Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Aricha highways, without taking illegal toll.

Extortion on highways must not be tolerated. The authorities concerned must take necessary steps to prevent extortion in the cattle markets and from cattle-laden vehicles on highways.  The law enforcers have to launch massive hunt for listed criminals, including muggers, robbers and extortionists ahead of the Eid festival. Before leaving the capital Dhaka or any other metropolitan city, dwellers must keep their valuables and ornaments with their relatives. The law enforcers must deal with  the organised gangs with iron hand to prevent any crime incidents.
