The Branch of JSC “AEM-technology” in Volgodonsk (a part of machine-building division of Rosatom - Atomenergomash) has manufactured and shipped Steam Header for the first Unit of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Rosatom, a subsidiary of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation official said.

Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) is the country’s first nuclear power plant, which is being implemented by Rosatom. The main construction works of the power plant are continuing at Rooppur in Pabna while its essential machineries are being made in Russia.

According to Rosatom, steam header is one of the largest components of Steam Generator. Its length is over 11 meters, width is 2.7 meters, height is about 3 meters, own weight is over 7 tonnes. Steam Header will be welded to 10 steam discharge nozzles on Steam Generator vessel. Dried steam goes out through the nozzles and enters the Steam Header, from where it enters the turbine plant through the pipeline system.

The Items were shipped by road to the port of Saint Petersburg of Russia on December 08, then the equipment will be loaded onto a barge and transported to the RNPP site. The sea route will be about 14,000 kilometers.

Steam Generator is a heat-exchange equipment that is a part of Reactor Plant; it belongs to the Items of the safety class 1. Diameter of equipment is more than four meters, length is about 14 meters, weight is 340 tonnes. The equipment of one NPP power unit includes four Steam Generators.

It is a top priority project on the Bangladesh government’s agenda, all the way up to the Prime Minister’s Office. The project will host two units, each with the latest generation 3+ VVER 1200 reactor. The operational life of which is 60 years with the possibility of extending the service life for 20 years. Total capacity of the plant is estimated to be 2,400 MW.

Earlier Architect Yeafech Osman, Minister of Science and Technology, told Bangladesh Post that the construction of the nuclear power plant is underway by taking all necessary measures to prevent spread of corona infection at the site, following the Bangladesh Government and WHO guidelines. In addition to the use of different types of safety equipment, everyone is tested.

“It is an international project and also a matter of honor for us. We hope at least 1,200MW unit of electricity from the first nuclear plant will be added to the national grid by 2023. The second with the same amount of power will be launched by 2024,” he added.

Bangladesh government believes that once the nuke plant goes into operation, it will offer a window of opportunities, such as ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply to over 15 lakh families and jobs for a large number of people.
