Bashundhara City Shopping Mall will not have Star Cineplex anymore. Urban young people no longer have the opportunity to crowd there to watch movies from home and abroad on the big screen.
Mahbub Rahman Ruhel, chairman of Star Cineplex, confirmed the bad news.
At a news conference last month, Ruhel said the Cineplex could be shut down without government support for the situation in corona epidemic.
Mesbahuddin Ahmed, senior manager of media and marketing department of Star Cineplex, said, “Last month, we received a notice from the owner of Bashundhara City Shopping Mall. They told us to leave the place. Now, we are forced to leave the place. We will close this branch of Cineplex.”
In this regard, Ruhel said in detail, “Bashundhara City Star Cineplex branch is closing. Shopping mall authorities issued a notice to leave the Cineplex branch a month ago. The notice states that the place must be vacated within three months.
There were 1600 seats in 6 screens. I couldn’t even try to keep the branch. However, other branches of Cineplex (Dhanmondi's Shimanto Square and SKS Tower in Mohakhali) will remain open. The new Sony Complex of Mirpur-1 will be launched as Cineplex.
Mesbahuddin also said that having two more branches of Cineplex in the capital would not be a problem. He said, even if the cineplex in Bashundhara City is closed, we will not have a problem.
But since this is our first place of screening and the rise of the Cineplex was at this Bashundhara City Shopping Mall- so there is a bit of emotion attached to it. And after this cineplex was built in 2004, the hall-enthusiastic middle class came to the cinema hall once again and started watching movies.
