Stage is set to introduce 5G by 2021

To support the government’s vision of turning the country into ‘Digital Bangladesh’, 5G will be introduced in the country within the stipulated time to bring about a radical change in the quality of education, communication, medical, industrial, transport and national security fields.

As the country has successfully conducted a 5G test experimentally, 5G internet service will be available in the country by 2021. Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar came up with these comments while speaking as chief guest at a seminar on 5G in Bangladesh organised by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) at IEB auditorium in the capital on Wednesday.

BTRC officially informed that 5G internet service will be available in the country by 2021. To this regard, the telecom authority has already given license to the mobile operators with a condition to make the service available all across the country by 2026. Citing the 5G is a highway of an industrial revolution and thus it is related to fourth industrial revolution the minister said, “Even the country has missed the previous three industrial revolutions, but in terms of 4.0 and 5G we will be in a leading position in the world”.

Mentioning many challenges ahead that the country needs to face to introduce 5G, Jabbar said, “Mobile and internet service providers are unable to give the quality service, as a result many of us have doubt that will we be able to introduce 5G. However, it’s not only about mobile operators, rather it will connect all sectors, industry, the society and almost everything of the country”.

Describing the young generation as the driving force of the country, he said, “Our young people are now practicing Robotics, Big Data, Internet of Things, Cloud and all modern technologies. We have already started exporting our IoT products to Saudi Arabia, by this December we will start producing motherboard in the country”.

BTRC chairman Md Jahurul Haque said, 5G technology will radically change the quality of education, communication, medical, industrial transport, national security and almost every field of the country. The advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud and IoT will get a new way for development through 5G. To this end, BTRC has initiated a roadmap.

Post and Telecommunications Department secretary Ashok Kumar Biswas, Spectrum Department Commissioner Aminul Hasan, General Manager of Grameenphone Business Enterprise Redwan Hasan Khan, Ericsson Bangladesh Country Manager Abdus Salam and Chief Technical Officer of Huawei Bangladesh Jerry Wang Su, among others, also spoke at the seminar.
