Sheikh Hasina asks Dhaka city north, south unit leaders

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked the party general secretary to arrange and hold the councils of the defunct committees of Dhaka city units of the ruling Awami League by December 15. Sheikh Hasina, also President of Awami League, gave the instruction while holding a crucial discussion with her party general secretary Obaidul Quader at her Ganabhaban residence.

“Besides, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina also asked me to complete all preparations by December 12 for holding the national council,” said Obaidul Quader. While sharing the news of the party chief’s directives with general secretaries of Dhaka city north and south units of AL, he said that the party chief gave the instructions after placing wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi Road No 32 in the city. Talking to journalists, Sheikh Bazlur Rashid Khan, Vice President, Dhaka city south unit Awami League said, “Earlier the party high command asked them to hold councils of the defunct committees between December 10 and December 15.

“The high command asked us to hold councils of the committees which are now invalid between December 10 and 15. We shall hold the elections as per the directives,” he said. Besides, several leaders and workers also said Sadeque Khan of Dhaka north city and Shahed Alam Murad of Dhaka south city, both general secretaries of AL, asked them to get prepared in order to arrange and convene the committees by December 10.

Meanwhile, preparations are going on to hold the councils of defunct committees of district, upazila, thana and ward level units of AL and associate bodies, including Awami Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Krishak League and Sramik League before the national council of AL on December 20-21, he added.

Talking to journalist Obaidul Quader said intruders and disputed persons would not get any place in any committee of the party. “We have a list of intruders and persons having disputes. They are under surveillance. They will not be included in any committee of the party,” he told a press conference at the AL president’s Dhanmondi political office here. Terming the intruders as ‘enemies of the party’, Quader urged the AL leaders and workers not to bring any controversial person in the party just for the sake of show off.

He said councils of all defunct committees of the AL are being held across the country. The AL general secretary said AL committees will be formed comprising experienced and young leaders to make the party stronger and well-organized. He said fresh committees have already been formed in 30 organizational units and dates of councils for 27 more units have been announced.

The minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s steps of carrying out drives against terrorists, corrupts, extortionists and land grabbers have earned appreciation at home and aboard. Quader said that Sheikh Hasina has even taken steps against those party leaders who are known to have violated rules.

“She has set an example by taking steps against terrorism, corruption, extortion and drug peddling,” he added. The 21st National Council of Bangladesh Awami League will be held on December 20 and 21 next. The AL’s National Council is held in every three years and the last council was arranged on October 23 in 2016. In the last council, Sheikh Hasina was re-elected president of the party, while Obaidul Qauder was elected its general secretary.
