It is importance to spread Bangabandhu’s people-oriented cooperative movement across the country. Bangabandhu envisioned fostering economic development at the grassroots level through cooperative initiatives, aiming to improve the lives of citizens.
Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives Minister MdTajul Islam said this while exchanging views with officials of Directorate of Cooperatives in the capital on Monday.
The minister highlighting Bangabandhu’s aspirations for social transformation through cooperatives and acknowledged the need to modernize cooperative laws and regulations to make these institutions more effective said, “Cooperatives are financial entities, no mismanagement will be tolerated. We are updating the laws to fortify these institutions against potential pitfalls.”
Addressed various levels of officials at the exchange meeting, he said, “There are endless possibilities for poverty-stricken individuals if the power of cooperatives is harnessed effectively. The registration of cooperative societies and the digitalization of their annual audit activities is important to ensure transparency and accountability.”
Md. Tajul Islam emphasized the creation of a clear understanding of cooperatives among the public, aiming to encourage greater participation and unlock economic development opportunities. He also stressed the need for qualified cooperative leadership, stating that effective organizational leadership is essential to mobilize village communities for social and economic change through cooperatives. The minister advocated for training programs to nurture capable cooperative leaders.
Senior Secretary of the Rural Development and Cooperative Department MosammatHamida Begum attended the meeting as a special guest, and the Director General of Cooperative Directorate Md. Shariful Islam presided over the meeting. The minister was briefed on the detailed activities, challenges, and prospects of the Directorate of Cooperatives at the beginning of the exchange of views.
As the government has been working towards revitalizing and expanding cooperative movements, it is expected that these efforts will contribute to the socio-economic development of the country, aligning with the vision set by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
