Bagerhat district police have launched a special operation to protect the forest resources of the Sundarbans. The operation was launched on Saturday under the supervision of Bagerhat Superintendent of Police from the area adjacent to Pashurnadi of Water Jetty in Mongla Port.

A 20-member team of Mongla police will be divided into two parts and will conduct operations in various places in the coastal areas including the Sundarbans. They are expected to continue their patrol from Mongla to Heronpoint in the Bay of Bengal.

Also present at the time were Mongla Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Asif Iqbal, Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Iqbal Bahar Chowdhury and other officials.

According to experts, many methods are being used by the forest department to protect the invaluable forest resources and wildlife of the forest, but none of them are working. Trafficking of valuable forest resources are still going on.

Numerous wild animals, including the Royal Bengal Tiger, are disappearing from the depths of the forest. If this continues, one day the fishery resources of the forest and the wildlife of the Sundarbans will come down to zero.

Bagerhat Superintendent of Police Pankaj Chandra Roy told Bangladesh Post that poachers in the Sundarbans are hunting the king of the forest, the Royal Bengal Tiger (tiger) and selling its skin, bones and muscles at exorbitant prices.

Saltwater crocodiles are also dying due to various reasons. Maya and Chitra deer are constantly being hunted illegally.

A class of deer hunters, with the help of some unscrupulous local influential people, enter the depths of the forest in the guise of fishermen. Deer are constantly hunted in the forest, later they are sold at higher prices.

Moreover, some miscreants are entering the forest at the jail base and going to the rivers and canals and applying poison to catch fish. If poison is applied in the canals of the Sundarbans, not only the fish but the whole ecosystem is the water get destroyed.

As a result, the damage to the forest environment is irreparable.

On the one hand, the fauna of the Sundarbans is in crisis due to various man-made factors including climate change. In addition to various species of animals, the forest has a wealth of fisheries, which is a rare example of this forest.

The role of the Sundarbans in maintaining the balance of the natural environment is immense. Therefore, in order to protect the huge amount of plants and animals in the forest, especially in accordance with the instructions of the government, the police will work from now on to protect the forest resources from various criminal activities.
