Spider-Man 3 is already in our field of vision even with it being less than a year since the last movie came out. And to kick things off, the movie’s already got a working title for the joint Sony-Marvel Studios film.
The working title for Spider-Man 3 is Serenity Now, which the name is listed in an issue of Production Weekly. (In this issue is also the inclusion of Disney+’s Star Wars: Kenobi and Star: Wars: Andor with the working titles of Pilgrim and White Snake respectively.) So what does “serenity now” mean, and is it related to anything going on in the third Spider-Man sequel?
As Screen Rant reports, “serenity now” comes directly from Seinfeld — it’s both the title of an episode and a calming mantra George’s father uses to help himself stay calm in said episode. And, as most Seinfeld episodes go, that backfires for everyone. This follows the trend of Seinfeld-related working titles for the first two films — Spider-Man: Homecoming being Summer of George and Far From Home being Fall of George. ComicBook.com mentions this is apparently an inside joke for the Spider-Man team.
But will the working title have anything to do with the plot of Spider-Man 3 itself? Judging by the past examples, it seems highly unlikely. The plot of the “Summer of George” Seinfeld episode has barely any correlation to the plot of Spider-Man: Homecoming. And Fall of George was simply a riff off of the first working title.
It would be a stretch to say that the “serenity now” mantra could find its way into the movie itself. But seeing how the team is fond of Seinfeld, there could be some parallels between the two. For example, the Seinfeld episode was all about expressing and controlling one’s emotions. For a “show about nothing,” that’s a universal topic that could be extended to the third Spider-Man installment. With Spider-Man due for some damage control following the incident with Mysterio, Spidey could use the “serenity now” mentality to help him stay calm during the fallout.
As far as what’s to happen in the movie, that’s kept a secret for now. It will certainly deal with the fallout between Spider-Man and Mysterio, and the other Sony movies this year seem to be teasing a “where is Spider-Man?” storyline that will probably drive the narrative as well. Recently, Tom Holland revealed in an interview that he knows everything that will happen in Spider-Man 3. But of course, he’s been properly trained now not to reveal any spoilers. (So it looks like Holland won’t be confirming those Sinister Six rumors anytime soon.)
At the very least, while this doesn’t tell us much about the movie, it’s a fun reminder that things are underway. And we’ve only got another year or so before Spider-Man 3 hits theaters. —Fansided
