A special committee has officially begun its work at Dhaka University (DU) to evaluate and provide recommendations on political activities on the campus. This initiative aims to address long-standing concerns about the impact of student politics on academic and campus life.
The committee held its first meeting on Saturday at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Hall. DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Admin) Professor Dr. Syama Haque Bidisha, and other senior officials were present at the meeting.
Chaired by former Supreme Court Appellate Division judge Justice Mohammad Abdul Matin, the committee includes prominent personalities from diverse backgrounds. Among them are Dr. Z.N. Tahmida Begum, former Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission and retired Professor of DU’s Department of Botany; Dr. Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq, Chairman of Bangla Academy and former Professor of DU’s Department of Bengali; and Professor Dr. S.M. Shamim Reza from DU’s Department of Mass Communication and Journalism.
In its inaugural meeting, the committee decided to introduce a suggestion box and a dedicated email platform to collect feedback from various stakeholders. These measures aim to facilitate open discussions and ensure inclusive consultations on key issues, such as Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections, the influence of student politics in residential halls, and strengthening teacher-student relationships.
The committee plans to consult widely with different groups, including general students, alumni, parents, journalists, distinguished citizens, and former DUCSU leaders. By gathering diverse perspectives, it hopes to address the complex challenges associated with campus politics and develop sustainable solutions.
The recommendations from the committee will guide the university administration in shaping the framework for political activities on campus. The goal is to foster a healthy academic environment while preserving DU’s historical tradition of nurturing student leadership and activism.
This initiative reflects DU’s commitment to addressing evolving socio-political challenges, ensuring that campus life remains balanced and focused on academic excellence.
