Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Tuesday stressed the need for strong coordination among three state organs – judiciary, legislative and executive – to ensure the welfare of country’s people. “People of the republic are the sources of all power . . . A coordinated work is a must among the three state organs to ensure the welfare of the countrymen,” she said while addressing a discussion at the Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) in city.
Terming the parliament as a centre point of all activities in the parliamentary democracy, the speaker said lawmakers enact laws in the parliament and they remain accountable to the people while the executive is accountable to the parliament. “The parliament works to ensure the transparency and accountability of the government,” Dr Chaudhury added.
Lauding the present government’s initiatives to empower the women folks, she said Leader of the House and prime minister, deputy leader of the parliament, opposition leader and Speaker are women as the government is working with utmost sincerity to empower female. “In the 11th parliament, a total of 23 female MPs, out of 73, were elected directly,” the Speaker mentioned in her speech.
A total of 235 participants took part in the defence service course titled ‘Role, Function, and Parliamentary Practices in the Context of Parliamentary Democracy.’ DSCSC commandant Major General Enayet Ullah, two Dhaka University teachers, faculty members and staff officers, among others, were present on the occasion.
