South Point School & College, Malibagh, has made history by securing both the champion and runner-up titles in the National School Team Chess Championship 2025. Organised by the Information and Communication Technology Division of the Government of
Bangladesh, with support from the Bangladesh Computer Council and in association with the Bangladesh Chess Federation, this event marked a milestone in the country’s chess scene.
The South Point ‘A’ team clinched the championship by remaining unbeaten, scoring 12 points from 6 rounds. The winning team included Siam Chowdhury, Ryan Rashid Mugdho, Woman Candidate Master Warsia Khushbu, and Master Nilava Chowdhury. The school’s ‘B’ team secured the runner-up position with 10 points. Its players were Md. Tahsinul Haque Zoheb, Muhtadi Tajwar Nashid, Zoena Mehbish, and Abrar Riazul Ahnaf Mohammad.
Government Laboratory High School finished third, earning 8 points. Its team members were Debleen Sarker, Naibedya Shreyan Saha, Rafid Arian Shuddho, and S.M. Abid Bin Gaffar Abir.
The 6-round Swiss League tournament featured 34 teams, qualified from 16 regional rounds held across the country. An award ceremony followed the competition, honouring winners of programming, chess, and quiz contests. Mr. Foyez Ahmed Tayyeb, Special Assistant to the Hon’ble Chief Adviser, attended the ceremony as the chief guest. ICT Division Secretary Mr. Shish Haydar Chowdhury, NDC, and Bangladesh Chess Federation President Syed Sujauddin Ahmed were present as special guests. Dr. Muhammad Mehedi Hasan, Executive Director of Bangladesh Computer Council, delivered the welcome speech, while Professor Dr. B.M. Mainul Hossain, Director of IIT, University of Dhaka, was also in attendance.
South Point’s Founder Chairman Engineer M.A. Rashid and Principal Colonel (Retd.) Md. Shamsul Alam, congratulated the young chess players, their parents, and all involved in this remarkable achievement.
