Sonali Life Ins CEO grilled in money embezzlement case

The court has sent the dismissed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sonali Life Insurance Company Limited, Mir Rashed Bin Aman, to prison in the money embezzlement case.

As the bail period expired, when he appeared in the court and applied for bail again, the court rejected the application and ordered to send him to jail. He was then sent to Dhaka Central Jail, Keraniganj.

The board of directors of Sonali Life had dismissed him on allegations of embezzlement and moral lapse.

He has been under discussion for several days due to allegations of various financial irregularities including loss of money from the company's funds.

An arrest warrant was issued against him in a case filed at Rampura police station. He has also been accused of buying houses and cars abroad through money laundering. 

According to the investigation report, on June 27, 2022 Mir Rashed bin Aman illegally withdrew Tk 1 crore and 50 lakh from the company and deposited and embezzled it in his own account.

The investigation committee also says that without any valid documents he received Tk 3 crore 99 lakh from the company in his various personal accounts in the year 2020, 6 crore 95 thousand in 2021, 1 crore 21 lakh in 2022 and 3 crore 8 lakh in 2023.

Besides, after being promoted as CEO, he put crores of Tk of the company into his personal account in various ways.

Meanwhile, when asked about the corruption of Rashed bin Aman, Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) officials said that they have no opportunity to comment on any matter under investigation.

It should be noted that Sonali Life Insurance, a new generation life insurance company, registered in 2013, has 205 branches across the country. 

The insurance customers of the company are more than seven lakhs. There are about 30,000 agents, and about 800 employees.
