"We have already distributed most of the allocation of Tk 1620 crore, the Sonali Bank Ltd. has been given for the industrial sector, from the stimulus package" said CEO & Managing Director of Sonali Bank ltd., Md. Ataur Rahman Pradhan on Thursday.
Prodhan said as the country's largest nationalized commercial bank, the Sonali Bank has been working in accelerating growth in the main sectors like SME, Industries, Agriculture and IT with utmost responsibility.
He was addressing a view exchange meeting organised by his bank at the conference room of Sonali Bank Bhaban, Matijheel in the capital, marking the anniversary of his joining the Sonali Bank as the CEO & managing Director.
"Covid has emerged as a threat to life, livelihood and economy across the globe. We have been working regularly to discharge all the designated duties facing the risks actually not from any pressure rather we did it from a sense of humanity and responsibility", Ataur Rahman Prodha said in his welcome address in the view exchange meeting.
Senior Deputy Managing Directors (DMD), General managers and other officials concerned of the bank were also present on the occasion.
He said the operating profit of the bank has increased by 27 percent within the last one fiscal year which has now been Tk. 4844 crore in July 2020 by increasing from the amount of Tk. 3809 crore from the month of July 2019.
"Our deposit has increased Tk 4377 crore this year, now the amount is Tk. 1,16,733 crore on July 2020 which was Tk. 1,12,366 in July 2019. Classified loan is vicious wound in banking sector, amid the adverse situation we have been able to bring down the amount of classified loan by Tk. 1460 crore which is 13.58 percent comparing to the year of 2019. We have also been able to reduce the number of loss making branch, we brought it down at 50 from previous number of 58. In the year 2020 we have opened 10 new branches", said Ataur Rahman Pradhan.
Replying to a query, Ataur said that as the state run bank, Sonali Bank has some limitations, as largest bank of the country it also draw the attraction and attention of all the people of the country and also media people, there have some scams, mishaps and naturally there will be criticism for that.
He said not to hanker after earning profit, rather amid the Corona pandemic the bank authority has preferred to ensure survival and keep the wheels of economy running.
Sonali Bank managing Director claims that the country has today become self sufficient food because of the significant contribution of the state run banks.
