A court in Brahmanbaria has sentenced Jasim Mia (43) to life imprisonment for murdering his father. He was also fined one lakh taka, with an additional one year of imprisonment without labour if he fails to pay the amount. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by District and Sessions Judge Md Shahidul Islam.

According to court records, on 14 August 2023, a dispute arose between Jasim and his father, 75-year-old Lilu Mia, over cutting jute in Kathalia village under Jinodpur Union of Nabinagar upazila. In a fit of rage, Jasim retrieved a wooden stick from the house and struck his father repeatedly on the head. Lilu collapsed to the ground, bleeding heavily.

He was rushed to hospital but was declared dead by doctors. His wife, Mumtaz Begum, filed a murder case with Nabinagar Police Station, following which Jasim was arrested.

Police submitted a charge sheet on 30 April 2024, accusing Jasim of the murder. The case was taken up for trial on 27 August the same year, and charges under Sections 302 and 323 of the Penal Code were framed on 7 October.

After reviewing witness statements and arguments, the court found Jasim guilty. Public Prosecutor Advocate Fakhruddin Khan expressed satisfaction with the verdict, saying justice had been served. However, defence lawyer Nazmul Haque Riton voiced dissatisfaction and confirmed plans to appeal in the High Court.
