Solar panels installed in Godagari to boost irrigation

Farmers under Barendra Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) are being benefitted by using electricity generated from solar panels. The electricity is being used to operate deep-tube wells and the excess electricity is being added to the national grid.

BMDA has installed a solar panel for operating a deep tube well in Godagari upazila and the process is underway to install two more solar panels to power more deep tube wells.

The solar panel is situated at Habaspur of Godagari. Chairman of Sustainable Energy Development Authority Mohammad Alauddin visited the solar panel on Sunday noon.

He was accompanied by Dr Ziaur Rahman Khan, Professor of Electrical Engineering Department of BUET and Modabbir Bin Anam, Project Coordinator of German Development Agency DIZ. They advised to spread the technology on a wide scale.

It is learnt, on July last year, BMDA connected solar panel in the deep tube well. Earlier, it used to run through electricity supplied from the Rural Electrification Board.

The solar panel is now producing 19-kilowatt of electricity every hour. Out of this, 11-kilowatt of electricity is used for running the deep tube-well and the rest is added to the national grid through net-metering.

While the electricity is not used for irrigation, the total electricity generated from the solar panel is added to the national grid.
