Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has recently placed a five-point proposal for the development and to facilitate the country’s small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and increase the sector’s contribution to GDP. This initiative by the prime minister has been long foreseen and we highly applaud such an initiative. We welcome this proposal to develop the products of SMEs which are already well acclaimed around the world.
SMEs are the backbone of Bangladesh because through these the rural and village people are also getting incorporated into producing goods which can play a vital role in lifting the economy of the country further. Moreover, if these SMEs are helped both by public and private organisations then these can be turned from small level manual factories into large scale industries. This will also establish a new market in the world economy.

Prior to this many projects have been initiated through which rural villages will be provided urban facilities which will help in the process of making the poverty stricken people achieve stability. Moreover, SMEs include a lot of women entrepreneurs who pitch into the economy by making handmade crafts etc. Through strengthening this sector, these underprivileged women entrepreneurs will be brought under the curtain of development.
The government is also focusing on creating skilled workforce which is high in demand around the world. These skills can also be used in SMEs to develop them into booming industries later on. This sheer vigour through which the government has taken to step up the game of SMEs is praiseworthy. This is a crucial phase to achieve the long sought after SDGs.
