Chris Smalling finally made his Roma debut, however, it was an evening to forget as he got off to a losing start, agencies reports.
The defender joined the club on loan from Manchester United for the rest of the season to pursue more first-team football.
Smalling gave a reasonable account of himself in the game
He was given the nod for Roma’s league clash at home to Atalanta and while Smalling made a few good challenges in the game, his new side suffered a 2-0 defeat.
This is Roma’s first defeat of the season. Former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko had the first real chance but his effort was well saved by Pierluigi Gollini.
The away side almost scored minutes later but Josip Ilicic’s half-volley went just wide.
Smalling seemed to have cramp towards the end, when Atalanta took control through Zapata before Marten de Roon wrapped it up in the 90th minute and the England man acknowledged as much.
