Slain journo Muzakkir’s family demands justice

The family members of slain journalist Borhan Uddin Muzakkir on Thursday demanded proper investigation and exemplary punishment in the brutal murder of the journalist. He was shot dead recently while covering news during a clash between two rivals of Awami League in Companiganj of Noakhali 

The journalist’s family members came up with the demand while speaking at a press conference at Shaheed Uddin Eskander Kochi Auditorium of Noakhali Press Club on Thursday.

In a written statement at the press conference, Nuruddin, the elder brother of journalist Muzakkir said, “My brother repeatedly pleaded to be saved before the killers shot him. But none came forward to save him.”

He thanked all the media of the country for covering the news sincerely since the incident of Muzakkir's assassination.

Muazakkir's father Nawab Ali Master said, “My son was a journalist and he always stood by the helpless people.”

He also made an appeal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to ensure the punishment of the culprits through proper investigation.

Muzakkir's mother Mumtaz Begum became very emotional and demanded the capital punishment for the culprits who killed her son.

Burhan Uddin Muzakkir's father, mother, elder brother, sister and other family members were present at the press conference.

Earlier on Friday (February 19) afternoon, followers of two groups of local Awami League locked into a clash over establishing supremacy in Chaprashirhat Bazar area.

Muzakkir received bullet injury and some 50 others were injured in the clash and chase and counter chase of the two groups. 

However, the locals rescued Muzakkir in a critical condition and took him to the Upazila Health Complex. He was taken to Noakhali General Hospital in the afternoon. Later, he succumbed on the way when he was being shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. 

Following the death of Muzakkir, district and upazila level journalists have staged human chain and brought out protest rally demanding the arrest and quick trial of the killers of journalist Muzakkir. They demanded the highest punishment against those involved in the murder.

Nawab Ali Master, father of the deceased, filed a murder case with Companiganj police station on Tuesday (February 23) accusing several unidentified persons.

The case was handed over to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) for further investigation. The PBI officials visited the spot on Wednesday after taking charge of the case. PBI Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman Munshi assured a fair and impartial investigation as soon as possible.
