The coronavirus situation has not turned stable enough yet to take off masks, the fear of emerging a new variant is still there, said Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) spokesperson and Line Director Dr Robed Amin.
He made the remarks in the regular virtual bulletin about the overall Covid-19 situation across the country on Sunday.
DGHS urged everyone to follow the hygiene rules to prevent the transmission of coronavirus.
He said, “We have been able to bring the level of Omicron to a tolerable level at present. Almost all the newly identified cases of coronavirus are Omicron. There is still no other way but to follow the hygiene rules. We have to follow hygiene rules in the long term. The situation has not come to take off masks yet.”
Dr Robed Amin further said that many people were thinking that the effect of Omicron had diminished and as a result, hygiene rules are not being followed.
“Many are arguing to take off masks. We have to keep in mind that even yesterday, 13 people died and 362 people contracted the virus,” he added.
He said that the virus is mutating and still evolving.
“The fear of whether a new variant will emerge or not is still there. Omicron's new variants are likely to surface. Omicron can seriously infect people with diabetes, hypertension, and cancer who are receiving steroids,” he said.
