Sitakunda oxygen plant rescue operation ends

Firefighting teams have ended the rescue operation at Seema Oxygen Limited in Sitakunda, where a massive fire broke out yesterday following an explosion that killed six people and injured dozens.

Sitakunda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahadat Hossain announced the end of the rescue operation on Sunday. 

“Despite taking precautionary measures, no one is allowed to enter the vicinity.  After the accident, the district administration opened a support centre and control room for the victims and the injured,” the UNO said.

“An investigation will be conducted to determine whether fire safety and other safety measures were in place at the accident plant.” He added.

Abdul Malek, Assistant Director of Agrabad Fire Service, said that the rescue operation of the second day started in the morning.  The rescue operation ended around 11 pm.  No more body was found.  

Sheema Oxygen Plant, which produced oxygen for industrial use, is located in the Kadam Rasul area of Sonaichhari near the Dhaka-Chattogam highway. The massive explosion rocked the area around 4:30 pm on Saturday.

6 killed and 33 people reportedly injured in the deadly explosion at the Oxygen Plant.  

The deceased were: Farid (32), Shamsul Alam (65), Ratan (45), Abdul Quader (60), Salah Uddin (35), Salim Richil (38). The authorities have announced Tk 200,000 in monetary aid to each family of the deceased.

A 7-member probe committee has been formed by the Chattogram district administration to investigate the fire.
