Shyam Sunder new BTRC chairman

The government has appointed Shyam Sunder Sikder, a former senior secretary of the government, as the chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notice recently appointing Shyam Sunder Sikder for three years.

The tenure of the previous chairman of BTRC Md Jahurul Haque ended on December 4.

Sikder retired as senior secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division in 2019.

The newly appointed BTRC chairman will enjoy the rank of a senior secretary along with the benefits of the same post.

Shyam Sunder Sikder was born on 10 January 1960 in Lonsing village of Naria upazila of Shariatpur district. His father's name is Girendra Mohan Sikder, mother's name is Krishnadasi Sikder. 

He obtained his MSc degree in Statistics from Chittagong University in 1981 and obtained his MBA degree with first class from Northern University in 2006.

His career started with teaching. Then in 1984 he joined Bangladesh Bank as an officer. He passed the BCS examination in 1984 and joined the administration cadre in 1986. At the field level, he served as Assistant Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner (Land), Magistrate, UNO and Additional Deputy Commissioner in different districts and upazilas. Besides, he has held various posts in various important departments and ministries of the government. He was Secretary of Bangladesh Land Ports Authority, Director in BPATC, Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Culture and Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. Since then he has served as the chairman of BSCIC.

He has served as the Secretary and Senior Secretary of the Division of Information and Communication Technology since 2014 and the Division of Posts and Telecommunications since 2016 respectively. He retired from government service on January 09, 2019. He later joined the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on 14 December 2020 as Senior Secretary.

Sikder was involved in writing from his student life. He is a renowned poet and writer. So far, a total of 42 books written and edited by him have been published. Among them are books of poetry, essays, stories, travel stories, rhymes, educational books, novels on the liberation war and research books. He has been awarded at various times for his literary works from various social and cultural organisations.

He is father of one daughter and one son.
