About 66 percent professor posts remain vacant in Mymensingh Medical College (MMC). Due to acute shortage of teachers, academic activities are being hampered at the medical and patients deprived of proper treatment. There are posts of 20 professors in 55 departments of MMC but 35 are vacant. However, the college authorities said that the ministry is being contacted repeatedly to fill up these posts.
According to the information of Mymensingh Medical College, the number of MBBS students in the college is 1 thousand 500 and the number of post graduate students is 375. And this college has 55 departments. Of them, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Medicine, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, General/Clinical Neurology, Physical Medicine, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Burn & Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatrics Nephrology, Ophthalmology, Radiology & Imaging, adiotherapy, ENT, Rheumatology and of Pediatrics and Dentistry - professor posts are vacant in the these departments.
Meanwhile, Professor Dr Seheli Akhtar Sultana of Anatomy Department, Dr Akhtarun Nesa, Physiology Department, Dr. Manvendra Bhattacharya, Neuro Medicine Department, Dr. Ashutosh Saha, Nephrology Department, Dr. Chittaranjan Debnath, Hepatology Department, Dr. Abul Kalam Azad,Surgery Department, Dr. Tanjina Latif in Gynecology and Obs Department, Neonatology. Dr. Nazrul Islam is working in the department, Dr. Habibur Rahman, hematology department are working as professor in the departments.
Meanwhile, Associate Prof Dr Sultana Alam in Virology Department, Associate Prof Dr Samimul Masood in Pharmacology Department, Dr Khurshed Alam in Medicine Department, Associate Prof Dr Saiful Islam in Orthopedic Surgery Department, Associate Prof Dr Jahangir Alam in ENT Department are performing the duties of Head of departments besides their existing duties.
Students of the medical college said on condition of anonymity that Mymensingh Medical College has been contributing to the medical education system in the country with reputation. Alumni of this college are performing important duties in various workplaces in the country and abroad. However, the professor posts of most of the departments of the college are vacant for a long time. If these positions are filled up, the quality of education and results of this college will be good as well as the reputation will increase. They demanded to fill up the posts of professor quickly.
Health affairs secretary of Mymensingh district Awami League and district BMA president Dr Matiur Rahman Bhuiyan said, “I went to the ministry after the formation of the new government to fill up the posts of professor.
However, it was not possible to meet the new health minister. Mymensingh Sadar MP Mohit Ur Rahman Shant has also been informed about this. It is hoped that action will be taken in this regard soon.
Professor Dr Habibur Rahman, Principal in charge of Mymensingh Medical College, said that professorships are vacant in most departments in Mymensingh Medical College for a long time. Demand letters have been sent to the Ministry of Health several times for this. As the professor post is vacant, the working associate professor or assistant professor have been made the departmental head in many departments with current duties.
