Short circuit triggers blaze at Sarisabari Health Complex

Published : 03 Nov 2025 10:18 PM

A fire broke out in the storage room of the Operation Theatre at the Sarisabari Upazila Health Complex on Monday morning, destroying vital medical supplies and equipment.

The incident occurred around 11:00 AM on the second floor of the facility. Hospital staff noticed smoke and flames emanating from the OT storage room and immediately alerted the fire service.

By the time firefighters arrived, local staff and community members had already brought the blaze largely under control. Fire service personnel then worked to fully extinguish the fire. However, important materials stored in the room were consumed by the flames.

Dr. Debashish Rajbanshi, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, confirmed the incident. "The fire originated in the storage room adjacent to the operation theatre around 11 AM," he said. "Our primary assumption is that an electrical short circuit may have caused the fire. Fortunately, no patients or staff were harmed, and there were no casualties."

He added that a full assessment of the damage and the exact cause of the fire would be determined after a thorough investigation.

Echoing the sentiment, Senior Station Officer Shahidul Islam of the Upazila Fire Service stated, "We rushed to the scene upon receiving the alert, but locals had already managed to control a significant part of the fire before our arrival."

The Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) is expected to form an investigation committee to look into the matter and determine the exact cause and total loss.
