Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain monitored the progress ships under construction of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC)'s fleet expansion program.

He visited the Jingjiang Nanyang Shipbuilding Company Limited shipyard in China on Friday.

BSC is implementing a project to procure two modern bulk carriers with a capacity of 55,000 to 66,000 deadweight (DWT) with its own funding.

The government recently approved the project based on the recommendations of the Advisory Council Committee on Procurement.

During the shipyard visit, the advisor closely monitored the progress of the construction work, technical standards, main equipment and application of environment-friendly technology of the ships. In addition, he exchanged views with engineers and experts and expressed satisfaction with the progress of the work.

The adviser said that if these modern technology-based bulk carriers are added, Bangladesh's shipping fleet will become stronger. The country's capacity in international trade will increase and import-export activities will become easier.

During the inspection, BSC Managing Director (MD) Commodore Mahmudul Malek said that BSC's ship fleet expansion project is being implemented with the guidance of the government and the overall cooperation of the Ministry of Shipping.

By including new ships, the country's transportation capacity in foreign trade will increase, foreign exchange will be saved and the shipping sector will gain a more solid foundation.

It was hoped that this inspection by the Shipping Adviser will make an important contribution to ensuring quality control and timely handover of ships under construction.
