Shimulia ferry terminal on the banks of the River Padma in Lohajang upazila of Munshiganj has been affected by erosion due to which ferry movements have been suspended at Ghat No 3.

The approach road leading up to Ghat No.3 began to erode away at around 12:30pm on Tuesday.

The detached pontoon is now floating in the River Padma. A shop and a masjid have also gone under water.

Neither the Water Development Board nor the ferry terminal authorities were able to take any action to mitigate the disaster as of Tuesday evening.

BIWTC AGM Shafiqul Islam said only five ferries were operational due to strong currents prevailing on the Padma. “Seven ferries were able to operate early in the morning. Now Ghat No.3 has been shut down, while Ghat No. 2 remains vacant as only five ferries are currently operating. ”

He added that people had already started heading for their village homes ahead of the Eid holidays and 200 to 250 vehicles were waiting at the wharf to cross the river.
