The 65th birthday of Sheikh Rehana, the younger daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and sister of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is today (Sunday). She was born on September 13, 1955.
Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana were saved as they were in Belgium when Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, along with most of his family members, was assassinated by a group of disgruntled army personal on August 15, 1975.
When Sheikh Hasina returned to Bangladesh and took the leadership of Awami League, Sheikh Rehana moved to London and began residing with her family there.
In spite of her living in London, Sheikh Rehana, a mother of three, lives a large part of her life in Bangladesh. She is married to Shafiq Ahmed Siddiq, retired professor of Department of Accounting & Information Systems at the University of Dhaka.
Among her three children, Tulip Siddiq is a Member of Parliament for the Labour Party in the United Kingdom House of Commons for the Hampstead and Kilburn constituency. Her son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby works for an international organization while another daughter Azmina Siddiq is the policy and research manager (child poverty and inequality) at The Children’s Society, a UK national children's charity.
In 2016, Sheikh Rehana was made a councilor of Awami League Dhaka South unit thus officially joins politics in Bangladesh. She is often seen accompanying her elder sister Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at different programmes including that of the AL’s and the government’s ones.
