Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its front organisations Wednesday observed the Homecoming Day of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the city and its adjacent areas in a befitting manner.
Rajshahi city and district units of AL observed the day through elaborate programmes including placing of wreaths at Bangabandhu's mural, jubilation rally and holding of discussions and milad mahfil.
Presidium Member of Bangladesh Awami League and Rajshahi City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton addressed the meeting held at Rajshahi Medical College auditorium as focal person. Mayor Liton said the very existence of AL was survived after Sheikh Hasina's return to her beloved motherland on May 17, 1981.
The nation fought against the autocratic ruler under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina who is still continuing her struggle to uphold the country's democracy, he added.
Mayor Liton said the historic return of Sheikh Hasina on this day 39 years back, factually removed darkness from the country after assassination of Bangabandhu and most of his family members on August 15, 1975.
He said her return instantly re-inspired common people in reestablishing democracy to build 'Sonar Bangla' as dreamt by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
The RCC Mayor urged the party leaders and workers to further strengthen the hands of Sheikh Hasina and speed up the current pace of development for building a peaceful and developed ‘Sonar Bangla’.
Marking the day, Rajshahi University (RU) organized a discussion titled "Historic Homecoming of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bangladesh's Democracy" at its Senate Building here today. Vice-chancellor Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar, Pro-vice-chancellors Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam and Prof Humayun Kabir and Registrar Prof Abdus Salam addressed the meeting, among others.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi city and district units of Bangabandhu Parishad and their front organizations held a huge public meeting at Batar More in the city in observance of the historic day this afternoon.
Different units of Bangladesh Chhatra League, Awami Jubo League and other associate bodies of AL brought out several processions in different areas of the city marking the day.
Another report adds from Khulna: The 43rd homecoming day of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was observed Wednesday in the district in a befitting manner.
On May 17 in 1981, she returned to the country after a long exile. The district and city units of Awami League organised different programmes marking the day.
The programmes included placing wreaths at the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman followed by milad mehfil and discussion.
The main discussion was arranged at the city AL office participated by leaders and workers of AL and its associate bodies.
With president of the city AL Talukder Abdul Khaleque in the chair, its general secretary MDA Babul Rana delivered the welcome speech. Senior AL leaders Syamol Singha Roy, Freedom Fighter Nur Islam Bandh, Sheikh Sayed Ali, Advocate Saiful Islam, Shafiqul Islam Palash and other leaders, among others, also spoke. Khaleque, immediate past mayor of Khulna City Corporation (KCC), narrated the enormous importance of the day.
He urged the party leaders to work unitedly for speeding up development to ensure welfare of common people for making the hard-earned independence meaningful.
"Return of Sheikh Hasina removed the darkness from the country after assassinations of Bangabandhu and most of his family members on August 15, 1975," he said, adding that Bangladesh has now become a global role model of development under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. The speakers said the return of Sheikh Hasina to the country paved the way for reestablishing democracy and spirit of the War of Liberation and trial of the war criminals to free the nation from the stigma.
They stressed on further strengthening the hands of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for building a peaceful and developed 'Sonar Bangla' free from hunger, poverty, exploitation and injustice as dreamed by Bangabandhu.
Besides, they urged city voters to re-elect Talukder Abdul Khaleque as KCC mayor to complete his unfinished works for making Khulna city as a green, clean and smart one.
