Sheikh Hasina Burn Institute inaugurated

Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, the world’s largest burn and plastic surgery institute, has started its formal functioning. Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque inaugurated the formal functioning of the specialized hospital on Thursday. In his speech at the inauguration ceremony, the Minister said, “Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman used Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) to ensure the treatment of wounded Freedom Fighters. Now, her daughter has established modernized 500 bed Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.”

Maleque said, “The institution has various activities including skin bank, transportation for major burn patients, high boric oxygen therapy, wound care center, steam call therapy, hand surgery, breast cancer treatment, comprehensive breast surgery, hair transplant and other advanced facilities. The Minister said, the country has improved average life expectancy to 73 years from 64 years during 15 year for good initiatives by the present government.

An estimated 6-7 thousand damaged ears and cleft lips patients have been treated in the country, the Minister said adding that, the same patients would now get more advanced and quality services at the institute. Major General Ibn Saifuzzaman said, Bangladesh Army wants to work for the people of the country. Currently Bangladesh Army is working on small and big projects, one of them is building the hospital, to ensure the best services for people.

Dr Samanta Lal Sen, Chief Coordinator of National Burns and Plastics Surgery Institute, said “The treatment of burnt patients started in the country with only five beds. It now has into 500-bed hospital.” “In the new burn institute, there is an advanced Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with 22 beds for the treatment of seriously burn patients at a time,” he said. “Besides, there is a 22-bed high dependency unit (HDU), 12 operation theaters and a sophisticated post-operative ward to ensure better treatment for the patients,” Dr Sen informed.

There is also a helipad on the rooftop of the institute to bring emergency patients. In its parking space, 180 vehicles can park at a time, he said. The 17-storey institute on 76 acres of land located at Chankharpool, next to the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover, will provide advanced treatment to burn patients while physicians and nurses will also get trainings to enhance their professional excellence.
