Sharp fall in onion price in Jhenidah market

 The price of onion has fallen sharp in different markets of Jhenidah in last two to three days. The price has come down to 43 per cent during the time. The demand of the much talked spicy crop has been dropped sharp fearing huge import of the same by the government, said the businessmen engaged in onion trading.

When the Roving Correspondent visited largest onion market Shailkupa of Jhenidah on Tuesday, witnessed that each maund of 40 kilograms of the onion has been selling at Taka 3,900 to 4,100, while it was selling at Taka 9,000 to 9,300 on Saturday at the same market.

Naimuddin Biswas, a villager when asked at the kitchen market said he purchased one kilogram onion at Taka 120, while the same was selling at Taka 260 last days.

A man identifying himself as a grower said he sold two maunds of the crop at Taka 9,000, while the price came down at Taka 4,000.

Onion vendor Ratan Chandra said he was eager to purchase the onion from the sellers last market day, while the buyers are not showing interest in purchasing the same fearing price fall once again.

Serajuddin Mia of Baraigram and Manwar Hossain of Arani in Natore when contacted at the onion market, said they are in dilemma as the price fallen sharp in last three to four days. They might lose their capital if the price falls further.

The buyers said the hoarders and dishonest onion traders have been releasing their stock faster when the government has been importing the same to save the people from the wrath of the lusty traders.
