Shanto, the first Bangladeshi batter to hit double century

Nazmul Hossain Shanto became the first Bangladeshi batter to hit tons in both innings twice when he smashed century in back to back innings in the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Shanto, who hit century in the first innings repeated the feat in the second innings on Saturday at the Galle International Stadium.

Shanto, the captain of Bangladesh made the record on Day 5 when he followed his first innings 148, was unbeaten with 125 in the second innings.

Shanto scored his first twin centuries in a Test against Afghanistan in 2023 with making 146 and 124 runs when the then milestone made him the only second Bangladeshi batter after Mominul Haque (176 and 105) who did it against the same opponents in Chattogram in 2018. 

Shanto, however, became the 14th batter in the world cricket to hit centuries in both innings more than once, he joined with the some of the world cricket greats like George Headly, Clide Walcott, Sunil Gavaskar, Greg Chappell, Alan Border, Rahul Dravid, Mathew Hayden, Aravinda de Silva, Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara, Jaques Kallis, David Warner and Herbert Sutcliff, who were the other 10 batters did job.

Meanwhile, Gavaskar, Ponting and Warner achieved the feat for three tiems in their career. 

Shanto, who was batting cautiously before to reach the hundred runs mark, hit three sixes in quick succession soon after bringing up his second century of the Test to finish on an unbeaten 125.

However, Bangladesh could play out only 11 overs in the post-lunch session and added 48 runs after the rain roughly interrupting for two-and-a-half hour.    Bangladesh captain Shanto after reaching on his 125 runs and team’s 285, asked Sri Lanka to chase down a target of 296 off 37 overs - at a required rate of eight an over.
