Canada-based midfielder Shamit Shome touched down in Dhaka on Wednesday morning, poised to make his eagerly anticipated Bangladesh debut. The 26-year-old, whose parents hail from Sylhet, is set to feature for the Bengal booters in the upcoming Asian Cup Qualifier against Singapore on June 10.

Shome's arrival marks a significant moment for Bangladesh football. His inclusion in the 26-member preliminary squad for the Singapore clash is seen as the next crucial step in the national side's midfield evolution, a process kick-started by the impact of Hamza Choudhury.

Upon his arrival, a visibly enthusiastic Shome conveyed his immense excitement about representing Bangladesh, noting the current buzz around the nation's football. He recounted that contact from the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) first came late last year, coinciding with preparations for a match against India, which prompted his consideration of the opportunity. Following a productive discussion with the new president, he decided it was the opportune moment to join. He also highlighted the personal connection of being surrounded by people of similar culture and background, an experience he had not found in Canada.

When questioned about Hamza Chowdhury's impact, Shome acknowledged that seeing him play for Bangladesh was indeed motivating, although he had already been contemplating joining the national team.

He confirmed productive conversations with the national coach regarding tactical approaches and the game plan for the Singapore fixture.

In response to queries about his awareness of Bangladesh football, he indicated a general following that has intensified since his call-up, now keeping a closer eye on local club performances and the national team's results over the past few years.

His immediate ambition with the national side is straightforward: to progress through the Asian Cup qualifiers. He stressed that his focus is squarely on helping Bangladesh perform strongly on the Asian stage.

Addressing the palpable excitement among fans, reminiscent of the reception Hamza received, Shome expressed deep gratitude for the widespread welcome he has received on social media.

He described this outpouring of support as a significant factor in his decision, noting the passionate football fanbase in Bangladesh is unlike anything he has experienced in Canada, and he eagerly anticipates experiencing that vibrant atmosphere.

As a midfielder, Shome confirmed discussions with the coach regarding his potential role, whether as a defensive or attacking presence. He conveyed his comfort and flexibility in both positions, leaving the final decision to the coach based on the game plan. He also mentioned drawing inspiration from several top midfielders, including Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and a long-time admiration for Cesc Fabregas, from whom he tries to learn. His stay in Bangladesh will be brief, as he has a club match scheduled in Canada just days after the Singapore encounter, necessitating a quick departure.
