Shakib to replace Mashrafe as ODI skipper!

Bangladesh cricket team miss the services of its ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. He still has 8 months left of his ban.

Before, ban Shakib was the captain of Bangladesh in Tests and T20Is. In his absence, Mahmudullah is leading the side in T20 format and Mominul Haque is the skipper in Tests.

ODI captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza’s captaincy tenure will end after the Zimbabwe series. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan Papon has indicated that, Shakib is the likely candidate to fill Mashrafe’s boots.

But the problem is, who will lead Tigers in the 50 over format before Shakib returns?

However, this year, Bangladesh do not have too many ODIs to play. Bangladesh will play a one-day international in Karachi in April. The three ODIs against Ireland that are due in May are important though.

This series will be part of ICC ODI League, therefore the outcome of this series is very important for Bangladesh.

So, who will lead Tigers’ in these four ODIs? Making Mahmudullah ODI skipper as well, seems a sensible decision at the moment.

When Shakib returns, he is likely to return to his role as Test and T20 skipper as Mahmudullah and Mominul were made interim skippers. So, cricketers and cricket lovers are eager to know that who will lead Bangladesh in ODIs after the Zimbabwe series.

This matter was discussed by BCB at a press conference on Wednesday.

President Nazmul Hassan informed that they are considering Shakib as the next ODI skipper, “We are thinking about him as the ODI skipper.

If he returns to form and remains fit, then he is the main contender for ODI captaincy. Shakib was always a contender.”

In October, Shakib will most likely not lead the side in T20 World Cup in Australia. This time Bangladesh will have to play in the qualifiers of the Twenty20 World Cup due to their rankings. Shakib’s ban will not end during the qualifying round.

Even if the team qualifies to play in the World Cup than they still will be without Shakib for the first few matches. Because of that, the T20 leadership flag will be in the hands of someone else in Australia.

Coach Russell Domingo, however, had mentioned Mahmudullah’s name as captain during T20 World Cup some time ago.
