After almost a one-year of absence in international cricket due to pandemic, Bangladesh returned to the cricketing arena on a high note as they whitewashed West Indies by 3-0. In the last and final ODI of the three-match series, Bangladesh thumped West Indies by 120 runs at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Monday.
However, amid all the joys and celebrations Shakib Al Hasan, one of the best stars of the Bangladesh national team, who returned in Bangladesh colours with his series, after his one-year ICC exile, got injured in the third and final ODI match of the series against West Indies. The all-rounder left the field after he pulled his groin while bowling.
The incident happened in the 30th over of the Caribbean innings. Shakib was preparing to bowl his fifth ball in the over. However, while going to bowl Shakib felt some tension in his groin after taking a run-up. He immediately grabbed his leg and distorted his face.
But Shakib still bowled. However, after that he was not able to resist anymore. Having bowled the delivery, he collapsed in pain. The physio attended to the ace all-rounder and after Shakib got up, he could not go through any lunges or jogs and left the field.
However, BCB doctor Monjurul Hossain Chowdhury was not able to clarify about Shakib’s injury. But he confirmed that Shakib had suffered a groin injury.
"Shakib won't be able to take the field today. He suffered a groin injury. He is now under observation. And we will decide for how long he needs to be under observation after the game when we reach the hotel. And as there is still a long time for the Test series, we cannot say anything for sure yet. But initially we do not think it is anything serious." BCB physician Monjurul Hossain Chowdhury told the media.
Later, Shakib’s unfinished over was completed by Soumya Sarkar. Earlier, with the bat Shakib added 81-ball 50 laced with three boundaries. Shakib was also adjudged Player of the Series for his brilliant form with both the bat and bowl throughout the series.
