Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan ended a prolific World Cup 2019 with 606 runs, thus surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record of maximum runs scored in the group stages of the tournament. Sachin had amassed 586 runs in the group stage 2003 edition of the World Cup, report agencies.
Shakib is only the third player after Sachin and Matthew Hayden to score over 600 runs in one edition. Sachin scored 673 runs in the 2003 World Cup held in South Africa while Hayden smashed 659 runs in the 2007 edition held in the West Indies.
Shakib continued his exceptional run with the bat against Pakistan as he scored 64 at Lord’s on Friday. In the process, Shakib became the only second cricketer after Sachin to score seven 50+ scores in a single edition of the World Cup.
Overall, the Bangladesh all-rounder has amassed 12 fifty-plus knocks and is placed second along with Kumar Sangakkara who also holds 12 fifty-plus scores in World Cup games.
However, Shakib could not help his team end their World Cup 2019 with a win as Pakistan came up with a spirited performance to beat Bangladesh by 94 runs at Lord's on Friday.
