Shakawath Hossain appointed Editor of daily Amader Shomoy

Journalist, columnist, and corporate leader Md. Shakawath Hossain has assumed charge as the Editor of the daily Amader Shomoy. He succeeds Abu Sayeed Khan in the role. Mr. Hossain formally took over his responsibilities on Sunday at the newspaper’s office located in Tejgaon Industrial Area, Dhaka.

Publisher of Amader Shomoy, Dr. Khondkar Showkat Hossain, along with journalists, officials, and employees of the organization, welcomed the new Editor with flowers. The event was attended by Md. Abdul Motaleb, Director of Human Resources of Unique Group; Syed Enamul Haque, DGM of PHP Family; and journalists, officers, and staff from various departments of Amader Shomoy.

Upon assuming office, Shakawath Hossain addressed the journalists and staff, stating that all necessary initiatives would be undertaken to take Amader Shomoy forward. He emphasized making every effort to uphold the newspaper’s legacy and reputation.

Alongside urging professional excellence among journalists, he assured improvements in employees’ welfare and benefits.

The newly appointed Editor called upon everyone to perform their respective duties with dedication to further establish Amader Shomoy as a reader-friendly and reliable source of news.

Mr. Shakawath Hossain began his career in journalism during his student life. He later transitioned into the corporate sector while continuing to write columns for various national dailies. Subsequently, he joined the English-language national daily The Business Post as Managing Editor, a position from which he stepped down earlier this year.

He has earned recognition as an icon in the corporate world, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sector. Recently, he was elected Vice President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Prior to this, he played a significant role for many years in the development of sports tourism in the country.

As a senior leader in tourism and hospitality, Mr. Hossain has amassed extensive experience with global hotel brands, with his visionary leadership and operational excellence widely acknowledged.

He has also made notable contributions to the expansion of tourism and hospitality education in Bangladesh. In this capacity, he serves as an Adjunct Faculty at the University of Dhaka, Southeast University, and American International University–Bangladesh.

He is currently pursuing a PhD in Tourism and Hospitality Management at the University of Dhaka, having previously earned an MBA and MPhil in the same discipline from the university.

Mr. Shakawath Hossain served for three years as Acting General Manager of the five-star hotel The Westin Dhaka. He was recognized by Marriott International as the youngest Resident Manager in Bangladesh. Since October 2019, he has been serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Unique Hotel & Resorts PLC. He is the only Bangladeshi hotelier who concurrently works as an industry practitioner, academic, and researcher.

In advancing sports tourism in Bangladesh, he previously served as Cricket Tourism Advisor to the Bangladesh Cricket Board and led the signing of the country’s first-ever Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the BCB and the Bangladesh Tourism Board.

Throughout his long and distinguished career, Mr. Shakawath Hossain has received numerous national and international accolades, including the Global Excellence Award in Hospitality Leadership and Innovation from the Australian–Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Tourism Face of South Asia at the South Asian Travel Awards (SATA); American Curry Award as Best Hospitality Icon; Most Awarded Hotelier by the Bangladesh International Hotel Association (BIHA); the Asian Curry Award, among many others.
