Former Shipping Minister and Awami League Presidium Member Shahjahan Khan was arrested from the city’s Dhanmondi early Friday.
“A special squad of Detectives of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) raided a house in Dhanmondi and arrested him from there at around 3:00am on Friday,” Md Rabiul Hossain Bhuiyan, joint commissioner (north) of the DMP’s DB, told reporters on Friday.
Later, a Dhaka court placed Shajahan Khan, 75, on a seven-day remand for interrogation in a case filed over the killing of 14-year-old Abdul Motaleb.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Ahmed passed the order after investigation officer Khokon Mia, a sub-inspector of Dhanmondi Police Station, produced him before the court seeking 10-day remand in the case.
On August 26, Abdul Motin, father of Motaleb, filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 175 others for killing his son in the city’s Dhanmondi area on August 4.
Last month, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) decided to launch an investigation into the former minister who was elected from the Madaripur-2 constituency.
Earlier in 2014, the ACC summoned him over allegations related to irregularities in plot allocation and the accumulation of illegal assets.
His affidavit for the 11th parliamentary election revealed his huge wealth, including two cars, 96 bhori of gold belonging to his wife and two buses registered under his wife's name.
He also served as the chairman of the standing committee of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.
Shahjahan Khan also the executive president of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation was a lawmaker of Madaripur-2 constituency. As an independent candidate Khan was elected lawmaker of the parliament for the first time in 1986.
Later, Khan was elected a lawmaker from the same constituency in 1991, 1996, 2001m 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024 as a candidate of the Awami League.
